Supporting Smarter Campus Hospitality and Retail Since 2020
Today, Kappture technology operates across cafés, restaurants, Students’ Union outlets, supermarkets, and wider campus retail locations, helping teams manage busy trading periods through a connected EPOS ecosystem.
With over 110 terminals deployed across the University of Nottingham campus, including 17 Self Service Kiosks, the partnership continues to evolve through ongoing collaboration, innovation, and long-term development.
The Challenge
When reviewing its existing technology estate, the University of Nottingham was looking for a platform capable of supporting a more modern, high street-style hospitality experience across campus.
The university required a solution that could:
- Improve transaction speed through integrated card payments
- Increase access to operational data and reporting
- Deliver greater hardware reliability across campus locations
- Support evolving student expectations around convenience and speed of service
- Adapt to changing operational and financial pressures
- Enable more flexible service models across hospitality and retail environments
Alongside day-to-day operations, the university also needed a system capable of supporting busy peak demand periods across campus while maintaining a consistent experience for both students and staff.
Why a Modern EPOS Platform Matters
Campus hospitality environments continue to evolve rapidly, with increasing pressure on operators to balance speed of service, operational efficiency, student satisfaction, and financial performance.
Having a flexible and connected EPOS platform in place allows hospitality teams to adapt service models depending on customer demand, staffing requirements, and wider operational pressures.
For the University of Nottingham, this meant introducing technology that could support:
- Faster transaction processing
- Reduced queue times during peak periods
- Better operational insight through real-time reporting
- Flexible ordering journeys across staffed and self-service environments
- Improved student convenience
- More efficient deployment of staff across outlets
- Scalability for future developments across campus
The Solution
The University of Nottingham utilises Kappture’s EPOS platform across multiple areas of campus operations, supporting both hospitality and retail environments with technology built around flexibility and ease of use.
The deployment includes:
- Over 110 Kappture terminals across campus
- 17 Self Service Kiosks across restaurants and cafés
- Fixed POS across hospitality and retail locations
- Mobile POS devices to support flexible service environments
- Student app integrations for account management, ordering, and loyalty functionality
Together, these solutions help streamline service, reduce queue times, and provide students with a more modern and connected campus experience.
“Kappture have been supportive in helping us to deliver in a rapidly changing landscape. We’ve moved from a fully manned EPOS system to include kiosks which support self-service ordering and quick scan fast lanes to both help the customer experience and free up team members to help deliver a better environment for both staff and students. The kiosk improvements have been key, with average transaction value increasing by around 15% at outlets where they’ve been installed. This is a key area we’re looking to improve further moving forward with the rollout of additional kiosks to more outlets. By using the Kappture system to its fullest, we’ve been able to help mitigate what has been a challenging environment over the last couple of years.”

Ongoing Partnership
Campus hospitality and retail environments require technology that can adapt to different service styles, locations, and peak trading periods throughout the academic year.
Kappture’s platform gives the University of Nottingham the flexibility to operate multiple service models through a connected ecosystem, while also benefiting from:
- Real-time reporting and operational visibility
- Instant product and pricing updates
- Flexible service across fixed, mobile, kiosk, app, and self-checkout environments
- Scalable technology capable of supporting future developments
- Ongoing account management and operational review meetings
- Continued collaboration with the Kappture product and support teams
Through regular reviews and ongoing collaboration, both teams continue to identify operational improvements, support evolving campus requirements, and help shape future developments across the wider Kappture platform.
Driving Innovation Together
A key part of the partnership has been the collaborative approach between Kappture and the University of Nottingham teams.
Over the years, the university has played an important role in helping shape ongoing developments within the Kappture platform, particularly around self-service ordering experiences and wider campus technology innovation.
One example has been the development of enhanced kiosk ordering functionality, allowing students to build and customise orders in greater detail during the ordering journey, similar to experiences commonly seen across major high street restaurant brands. This flexible ordering capability can be applied across a wide range of food and beverage use cases, helping improve both customer experience and operational efficiency.
The partnership has also focused on exploring new technologies across campus operations, including the continued rollout of self-service and quick scan ordering experiences, alongside ongoing development of the student app to further support loyalty, ordering convenience, and evolving higher education requirements.
A Long-Term Partnership
The University of Nottingham and Nottingham Students’ Union have been valued partners of Kappture since 2020, with the relationship continuing to grow through ongoing collaboration, innovation, and long-term planning.
More recently, the partnership was further strengthened through a long-term contract extension, reinforcing a shared commitment to continuing the development of modern campus hospitality and retail experiences.
As a business with strong roots in the East Midlands, it is particularly rewarding for Kappture to work closely with a leading local university and Students’ Union, supporting both day-to-day operations and future innovation across campus.
